Understanding California Break Laws
- If you work in California, you must follow certain break laws to remain consistent with state standards.
- Employees working more than 5 hours must take a 30-minute unpaid food break. If they work longer than 10 hours, they are entitled to a second meal break.
- Employees must be given a 10-minute paid rest break for every four hours working (or a significant portion thereof).
- Overtime Rules: Employees who work more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week are eligible for overtime pay (1.5 times the standard rate).
By using the Worksana Work Hour Calculator, you can accurately track your work hours and break times to ensure compliance with these regulations.
How to Use the Worksana Work Hour Calculator
Step 1: Select Calculation Mode
Use the toggle on the interface to choose between:
- California Overtime (default)
- Federal Overtime
Each mode follows different rules for calculating overtime and regular hours. Select the one that applies to your workplace.
Step 2: Input Daily Work Details
For each of the 7 days:
- Clock In Time – The Time you started work
- Clock Out Time – The Time you finished work
- Meal Break Length – Enter the total break time in hours (e.g., 0.5 for 30 minutes)
Note: Overnight shifts are not supported automatically. Break them at midnight or enter them as separate “day shifts.”
Step 3: Automatic Calculations
Once you input your times, the calculator will:
- Deduct the meal break from your total hours worked
- Classify hours into:
- Regular
- Overtime
- Double-time (California mode only)
- Regular
- Display each day’s breakdown in a table
- Show weekly totals at the bottom
Step 4: Review Results
The table will update instantly to show:
- In California Mode: Clock In, Clock Out, Meal, Regular, Overtime, Double-time
- In Federal Mode: Clock In, Clock Out, Meal, Regular, Overtime
California Overtime Rules
California has more detailed overtime policies than Federal rules. Here’s how it works:
Daily Overtime (Per Day)
-
Regular Time: First 8 hours of work
-
Overtime: Next 4 hours (8–12 hours)
-
Doubletime: Any time over 12 hours in a single day
Weekly Adjustment (40-Hour Rule)
-
Only the first 40 hours of the week are considered regular time
-
If your daily regular hours push the weekly total over 40 hours, the extra hours are reclassified as overtime
7th Consecutive Day Rule
If you work 7 days in a row, the 7th day has special treatment:
-
First 8 hours are overtime (no regular time)
-
Over 8 hours are doubletime
Federal Overtime Rules
Federal rules are simpler and focus only on weekly totals.
Weekly Overtime
Regular Time: First 40 hours in a week
Overtime: Any hours over 40 in the same workweek
No doubletime is required under federal law
Daily Hours
Under federal rules, the number of hours worked per day doesn’t affect overtime—only the total per week matters.
